We know that kidneys filter harmful substance from the blood. Sometimes, the filtered harmful substance (e.g. calcium oxalate, calcium and ammonium phosphate, uric acid etc.)gather in the kidneys and make larger objects. Such objects can not pass in the urine this phenomenon is called Kidney Stones.

Causes :

*- Kidney Stones is formed due to high level of calcium,calcium oxalate, oxalic acid, uric acid and by dehydration.

*- Extra amount of vitamins C and vitamins D in a diet may also cause Kidney Stones.

*- The other causes of Kidney Stones are reduce water intake, excess uric acid in the blood, urinary tract infection and alcohol consumption.

Symptoms :

*- They cause obstruction in urinary track. 

*- It cause severe pain when the pelvis, ureter or urinary bladder.

*- Other symptoms of Kidney Stones include nausea, vomiting, Burning in urethra, frequent urination, foul-smelling urine, blood and pus in the urine and bloating.

Treatment of Kidney Stones 

When Kidney Stones is small in size, It passes easily from the body with urine but when stone is large in size, It removes from the body through surgery.

Surgery :

In this method for the treatment of Kidney Stones patient's kidney, ureter or urinary bladder is opened and stones are removed.

But now a days certain other methods are successfully used for the removal of Kidney Stones. So common method used for the removal of Kidney Stones is laser therapy or lithoripsy.

lithoripsy :

The most recent method of removing Kidney Stones is lithoripsy.

It is the non - surgical removal of Kidney Stones. This technique is used to break up Stones present in the kidney, ureter or urinary bladder. 

In this method, the stone inside the kidney is targeted by shock - waves. The shock waves break the stone into small or tiny pieces, which are passed out of the body in the urine. In this way Stones are removed from the body of patient.

Tidbit :

Lithoripsy works best with Stones between 4 mm to 2 cm in dimeter that are still located in the kidney. It can be used to break up Stones which are located in a ureter too, but with less success.
